Three stations for Art-Science – Announcements


From October 12, 2021 to February 27, 2022, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni will host Three stations for art-science. This ambitious and comprehensive project exploring the interplay between art, science and society and occupying two entire floors of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, is divided into three different exhibitions:

T zero, curated by Paola Bonani, Francesca Rachele Oppedisano and Laura Perrone,

Uncertainty: interpreting the present, predicting the future, organized by the INFN Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Vincenzo Barone, Fernando Ferroni, Vincenzo Napolano and Antonella Varaschin,

The science of Rome: the past, present and future of a city, organized by Fabrizio Rufo and Stefano Papi and carried out with the patronage of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the Sapienza Università di Roma. The division of the theme into three exhibitions makes it possible to approach it from three different angles: contemporary art (T zero); the most recent discoveries in physics and scientific research (Uncertainty); and history (The science of Rome).

With Three stations for art-science, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni aims to illustrate the possibility that different methods and requirements can determine not only points of contact but new territories of experience, formation, growth and reflection. The journey begins metaphorically with the idea of ​​a “station” precisely because of the paradigmatic nature of the transformation of the station since the movement-progress of the 19th century station, a place of meeting and socialization, via research stations. where scientists stopped to conduct observations and experiments, at space stations, humanity’s technological outpost in the cosmos, and contemporary forms of “stasis” such as quarantine, homework, etc.

This transformation brings the proof, if it were necessary, that knowledge can be based neither on certainties nor on the division of disciplines, but it can be maintained in the dimension of research which is a moving, potential space, uncertain and free where science and art meet. Inspired by this thought, the Rotunda of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni will host dialogues and screenings in which the themes of the individual exhibition projects will converge: conferences, lectures, performances and the exhibitions presented will establish new periods of accessibility to knowledge.

Making these barriers “porous” goes hand in hand with another objective, which is to transform the very notion of “exhibition” by moving towards an experience capable of combining the visual and educational aspects.

Thanks precisely to this juxtaposition, the project intends to challenge its audience, inviting them to take an active part in the event.

To further strengthen the rigor of the dialogue between contemporary artists, topical scientific experiments and historical awareness of the role played by Rome in research, the visual arrangement of all of the “machinery” of Three stations for art-science was placed in the capable hands of a team of two artists and designers called Formafantasma.

The research of the thirty artists involved in the T zero The exhibition is configured as a place for debate, abandonment or reversal of the themes and paradigms of our contemporary world: profiling and automation, frontiers of medical genetics, global warming, ecological reconversion, forecasting models and overflow.

The goal (and the strong point) of The science of Rome is to illustrate the history of scientific ideas and their impact on society through the great scientists who worked in Rome and the major discoveries that were made here.

Uncertainty: interpreting the present, predicting the future aims to illustrate some of the many facets of the notion of uncertainty and the ways in which science deals with it.

And our awareness of the inevitability of uncertainty triggers a need to rethink and optimize the ideas and tools that enable us to understand and govern it, drawing on science, art and knowledge. culture at all levels to help us.
