Job information: This position will be filled using the authority of Title 42 (g). Full time – Service except Limited to 3 years. After the completion of the first 3 years, the appointment may be extended in increments of 3 years.

Job summary: The biomedical physics division of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories (OSEL) has an opening in Silver Spring, MD for a full-time scientist / engineer position. The Division conducts research on devices to evaluate and improve the safety and efficacy of medical devices. We are looking for a candidate with a concentration in electromagnetic (EM) research, both in the laboratory and in modeling. Our EM research covers a wide range of diagnostic, therapeutic and communication applications and sources. Tasks will include measurement and analysis of electromagnetic fields, specific absorption rate (SAR) and investigation of electromagnetic interference, RF heating and RF communication protocols. The candidate should have a strong background in electrical and electromagnetic engineering with experience in one or more of the following areas: laboratory experience in EM, SAR or CEM data collection, preferably in the area of ​​safety and device compatibility medical; computational electromagnetic modeling; electromagnetic dosimetry; and electrical medical devices.

The position focuses on laboratory and computer research, as well as policy support or advice for the review of new medical devices and the analysis of device failures. The successful candidate will produce written technical and scientific papers for peer-reviewed publications and consultation support activities. Excellent oral and written skills are required.

Academic requirements: Applicants must have a master’s or doctoral degree. or equivalent degree in engineering, physics or a related scientific field. The candidate must be able to demonstrate mastery of the principles and practices of EM measurement and modeling and the ability to apply them to the safety of medical devices. This will enable the fellow to serve as a technical authority in the scientific analysis of the safety and efficacy of medical devices; provide an authoritative analysis of the scientific data submitted to the Agency; and develop new and innovative approaches to scientific testing required for FDA medical device reviews.

Qualifications: Please document the relevant knowledge, skills and abilities for each area described below and submit with the application.

  • Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent scientific degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science / Engineering, Polymer Science / Engineering or related field. postdoctoral research experience is preferred.
  • At least three years of experience in planning and conducting laboratory and / or computer research (e.g. with multiphysics modeling software) in the field of electromagnetism, preferably with a focus on safety medical devices.
  • Experience in reviewing, analyzing and using scientific data or other information to advance security technology, preferably with a focus on medical device-related EM.
  • Knowledge of scientific principles and practices associated with the evaluation of RF equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate and contribute to multidisciplinary teams and working groups to resolve difficult or controversial research questions.
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills.
