Shibli Faraz Integrated Physical Oceanography Laboratory at NIO

Senator Syed Shibli Faraz, Federal Minister of Science and Technology, visited the National Institute of Oceanography. The Minister inaugurated the Integrated Physical Oceanography Laboratory (IPOL) at the NIO and Dr. Samina Kidwai, Director General of the NIO, briefed the Minister on the PSDP project under the Prime Minister’s Performance Agreement “Monitoring the Seawater Intrusion, Sea Level Rise, Coastal Erosion and Land Subsidence along Sindh and Balochistan

The NIO Physical Oceanography Section’s Integrated Physical Oceanography Laboratory will act as a hub where all physical parameters and associated data will be received and analyzed using the latest technology.

The efforts exerted by the scientists of the National Institute of Oceanography and the project team in the field of ocean sciences were appreciated by the Honorable Minister with the hope that the institute will continue to prosper and expand its activities of research. The Federal Minister and the Federal Secretary for Science and Technology also visited various laboratories of the Institute and briefly met the scientists and discussed the research they are carrying out.

The Minister emphasized that the findings of the NIO project will provide baseline data that will ultimately help assess the damage and provide the basis for suggesting and formulating policies to mitigate seawater intrusion, sea level rise of the sea and the mapping of the land subsidence zone along the Pakistani coast.
