The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory operated by Princeton University for the Office of Science of the US Department of Energy. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations necessary to achieve fusion as a source of energy for the world.

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is looking for outstanding candidates for a position in the field of digital fusion plasma physics in the theory department. The successful candidate will play a leading role in the development and application of kinetic simulation codes and integrated simulations for modeling tokamak disturbance events. In addition, the successful candidate is encouraged and will have the opportunity to conduct research with broad fusion research programs and topics at PPPL, in particular, in collaboration with fusion experiments.

The main objective of this work is to perform computational and theoretical research and to develop a physical understanding of the complex transport of 3D plasma in the tokamak disturbance process to improve our ability to predict the progression of plasma disturbance and to explore innovations for effective mitigation.

  • Develop, verify and apply a global kinetic model based on first principles to simulate the thermal quenching process, with extension to large plasma transport problems in a stochastic magnetic field. (55%)
  • Develop an integrated modeling of the tokamak disturbance by coupling the 3D kinetic transport simulation of thermal quenching with MHD and runaway electron calculations. (32%)
  • Publish and present research in peer-reviewed journals and at professional conferences. (ten%)
  • Participate and collaborate in the development of grant applications. (3%)

Education and experience:

  • A doctorate in plasma physics or a similar field is required.
  • At least two years of postdoctoral research experience.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of the physics and experiments of magnetic fusion plasmas.
  • Experience in scientific programming in a high performance computing environment.
  • Experience with kinetic or gyrokinetic simulation approaches and codes.
