Orion Space Solutions to Develop State-of-the-Art Earth Observation Processing System for NOAA

OSS technology will allow users to visualize Earth’s past and present and predict the future environment

LOUISVILLE, Colo., October 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has awarded Orion Space Solutions a grant to build a dynamic and transparent one-stop platform for processing, analyzing and visualizing Earth observations using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies . The resulting system will allow humans to better understand environmental changes on Earth, taking into account both current and past environments to provide important information about rapidly changing environments.

“Leveraging AI technologies and digital solutions, the platform being developed for NOAA will automate the processing, analysis and visualization of Earth observations collected by space, airborne and ground-based sensors. “, declares Wanli Wu, principal investigator of the project at Orion. “Our system seamlessly connects space, atmospheric, land, and ocean observations from NOAA and elsewhere in one place, allowing users to reconstruct past and present Earth environments. It can also serve as a front-end infrastructure taking into supports operational numerical weather prediction models.”

Wu and his colleagues at OSS have deep expertise in AI, modeling and data. With partners Booz Allen Hamilton providing digital twin technology capabilities, and the National Center for Atmospheric Research providing Earth system modeling and data insights, the team will transform the wealth of NOAA data collected from various sensors and platforms into valuable knowledge.

Digital twin technology acts as a real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process, for example by digitally replicating the appearance of an ecosystem before and after a forest fire. It “connects the dots” seamlessly between data sources, bringing Earth observation data together in one place for processing, analysis and visualization. In doing so, the platform provides unprecedented data visibility and insight and, in the example, a view of current or future impacts on the ecosystem.

Booz Allen is excited to demonstrate our experience building smart, AI-powered digital twins from design to implementation, delivering scalable, open-source technology solutions that will have an immediate impact on NOAA’s mission to monitor our changing global environment,” says Munjeet Singh, Booz Allen senior vice president and head of the company’s Bright Labs incubator.

“The team brings deep expertise in AI, data science and digital twin, developing new ways to help NOAA better understand and address pressing environmental challenges,” said Rachel Hausersenior director of business development for Orion Space Solutions.
