Los Alamos National Laboratory and SK hynix to Demonstrate First-of-Its-Kind Ordered Key-Value Storage Computer Storage Device

Newswise — Los Alamos National Laboratory and SK hynix, a leading semiconductor innovator and memory/flash manufacturer, will demonstrate the world’s first ordered Key Value Store computing storage device (KV-CSD), result of a collaboration between the high performance computing department of Los Alamos division and SK hynix.

The Lab is moving its large-scale simulation input-output (I/O) from a file-based system to a record-and-column-based system, enabling analysis using Big Data/Analytics community tools. The lab has shown 1000X speedups on parsing simulation output by leveraging indexing to achieve on-query data reduction through their DeltaFS parallel file system technology. These indexing capabilities allow ordered range queries and point queries. Pushing indexing capabilities closer to storage devices can save orders of magnitude of data movement when retrieving for analysis.

In a first for the non-volatile express memory industry, systems researchers at SK hynix have successfully pushed indexing capability functionality into the new KV-CSD prototype to suit lab security science applications. .

“Moving our large-scale physics simulations from file-based I/O to record- and column-indexed I/O showed incredible speedups for analyzing simulation output,” said Gary Grider, head of the High Performance Computing division at Los Alamos. “Demonstrations like this show that it is possible to build an ordered KV-CSD that moves the ranking and indexing of data as close to the storage device as possible, maximizing gains when recovering indexing on the fly when data is written to storage.The command capability allows for range queries that are especially useful in computer science applications as well as one-time queries where key value storage is known.

Los Alamos National Laboratory and SK hynix have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for the design, implementation and evaluation of KV-CSD.
