DIAT obtains advanced laser lab and high power CO2 laser facility


Khadakwasla, December 6, 2021: The Defense Institute of Advanced Technology Pune, considered as the University of the Defense R&D Department, Ministry of Defense, Indian Government has set up two laboratories “Advanced Laser Laboratory” and “High Power CO2 Laser Facility ”to be one of the futuristic and strategic interdisciplinary groups for optics, lasers, quantum and surface engineering.

These laboratories were inaugurated by Shri Hari Babu Srivastava, Managing Director, Technology Management, DRDO, and Dr Sudhir Kamath, Managing Director, MED & CoS (Microelectronic Device & Computational and Cyber ​​system) DRDO on December 6, 2021.
The Advanced Laser Lab comprises six state-of-the-art research facilities with the following themes: Photonic Modeling, Fiber and Semiconductor Laser, Optical Communication, Laser Spectroscopy, Wafer Tracer, Wire Bonding Facility, and Quantum Cascade Laser Characterization. These facilities are one of a kind and will be the forerunners in supporting various institutes and research laboratories for Atmanirbar Bharat.

In each research center, state-of-the-art tools are installed in the newly constructed Class 10,000 clean room. New labs can meet future laser and photonics research challenges, including quantum cascade laser, quantum dot laser, interband laser, fiber laser and amplifier, laser beam lasers. Mode Lock, Optical Communication, Fiber Optic Sensors, Laser Spectroscopy, Integrated Optics & Si-Photonics, IR Thermography, etc.

The quantum cascade laser characterization facility is unique in the country, equipped with an FTIR and other advanced tools capable of characterizing lasers from 200nm to 1THz in wavelength. The photonic modeling facility is equipped with high performance computing with Nextnano. NGF, Lumerical Device Suits, RSOFT BPM & Fullwave, L-Edit and personal version of Optics Studio software. These software tools are capable of designing and modeling almost any semiconductor laser, optical system, and integrated optical and photonic device that will support various semiconductor industries from PME and LE.

The high power CO2 laser installation is equipped with a 1 kW Diamond E-Series industrial CO2 laser. This facility will soon be equipped with a 2D scanner for materials processing and other directed energy applications. The high power CO2 laser and laser spectroscopy research facilities were established with the support of the Laser Science and Technology Center, LASTEC, DRDO, Delhi. These facilities are open to academics / industries and R&D laboratories for the development of futuristic technologies for the Atmanirbar Bharat.

All of the above facilities will be technically managed by the Laser and Photonics Research Group, Department of Applied Physics. Currently, the group is carrying out two flagship research projects on the design and development of mid-IR and THz quantum cascade laser technology sponsored by DRDO.

On this occasion, Dr CP Ramanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor DIAT, declared that the establishment of these two advanced futuristic laboratories would be more beneficial for the M.Tech / PhD academics in the field of research as well as for the projects of sponsored research.
