Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Fusion Energy Division is seeking applications for a Qualified Computational Fluids Engineer, focusing on helium gas cooling. The selected candidate will work and lead various projects in the development of technical solutions for fusion energy component design and experiments. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Fusion Energy Division (FED) invites applicants for a helium cooling position in fusion blankets and engineering design. The FED develops the technical bases of the first nuclear fusion installation and involves several disciplines, in particular the cooling of helium gas. A helium flow loop experiment has been performed, and it is coupled with extensive calculations to explore helium flow behavior and corresponding thermal performance in both test articles as well as future covers fusion core and other fusion core components. We are looking for people with advanced technical and analytical skills who can conduct both experimental and computational activities. The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team of experimentalists, simulation/design and technology experts.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be involved in both the development of new models and the application of existing models and simulation tools to understand melting hedging processes and the optimization of their design. This focuses on the computational fluid dynamics of helium, but may involve thermal-hydraulics, mass and heat transfer, materials, and the behavior of hydrogen. In addition, it is planned to lead and participate in helium experiments, as well as contribute to the development of experimental equipment. The selected candidate will be responsible for interacting with divisional staff and external collaborators who work with the ORNL research group. The candidate will be expected to work independently, lead, execute and collaborate on simulation/design activities and associated experiments, fully document the work in technical reports and publications, contribute to the identification and development of research proposals.

Basic qualities:

  • The successful candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Thermal-Mechanical, Fluids, Engineering-Materials Interface or in a related field.
  • Candidates should have experience developing and applying complex engineering codes and preferably have knowledge of nuclear systems. Experimental opportunities and the development of experimental capacities exist, and the candidate is expected to lead or participate in, as well as participate in, multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Candidates must show examples of their academic and professional experience.
