24. March 2022 | Markets & Companies
BASF has opened a new laboratory building for the development of automotive refinish coatings and innovations beyond paint at its site in Münster, Germany.
The new laboratories are supplied with thermal energy using waste heat from the company’s waste incinerator, which is returned by underfloor heating.

The opening aims to underline the position of the Coatings division as a forward-looking and innovative company. “It’s another part of our positioning as the global innovation center of BASF Coatings. We thus complete a series of global technical innovations. This includes the Lean Lab, which we started operating in 2018 at this site, as well as our film functionalization plant for various industries,” said Uta Holzenkamp, Head of Coatings Division at BASF.
Agile form of collaboration
The laboratory building, whose facade is designed in six different grey-blue shades that change depending on perspective and daylight, creates future-oriented workplaces. According to the company, the innovative layout of laboratories, warehouses, offices and meeting rooms enables an entirely new form of agile collaboration that aims to promote not only efficiency and effectiveness, but also collaboration and global creativity.
Formulation of automotive coatings
The automotive industry and varnish manufacturers spend considerable sums to produce particularly aesthetic surfaces. In the paint industry, the focus is on protection against corrosion, weathering, chemical and mechanical influences as well as on obtaining attractive surfaces. Several manufacturers specialize exclusively in automotive lacquers. This book deals with the composition and production of the most difficult components as well as their physical and technological characteristics of application. Application technology characteristics describe application behavior, protection task, and response appearance. Ulrich Poth approaches the people entrusted with raw materials, systems and application procedures. In addition, Automotive Coatings Formulation is aimed at all chemists, physicists, engineers and other technically interested people.
