Associate Research Physicist, NJ for Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL)


PPPL has an open postdoctoral position in the field of digital plasma physics, to play a key role in tokamak applications and the development of the Gkeyll code, which uses advanced discontinuous Galerkin algorithms to simulate plasmas with different levels of fidelity. We are looking for an energetic candidate who wants to be at the forefront of high performance computing with fusion energy research applications. The work supports DOE’s Scientific Discovery Projects Through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) and other PPPL projects as part of US and international research in plasma physics. This is an entry-level position at the rank of Associate Research Physicist.

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory operated by Princeton University for the Office of Science of the US Department of Energy. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations necessary to achieve fusion as a source of energy for the world.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Gkeyll team to add new physical abilities focused on modeling the peripheral region of tokamaks and making comparisons with experiments. This will involve extensive coding in C ++ and higher-level scripting languages, optimization on parallel supercomputers, and work on improving physical capabilities in a continuous gyro-kinetic solver.

Education and experience:

  • The candidate must have a doctorate. in plasma physics, astrophysics, applied mathematics or a discipline closely related with experience in computational fluid dynamics and kinetic theory or other areas of computational physics.
  • Graduate level knowledge of plasma physics is required.
  • Experience in gyrokinetics and plasma fluid modeling is desirable.
  • Experience with advanced CFD algorithms, C ++ and modern IT tools (including GPUs) is a plus.
  • Communication and writing skills in English are required, as is the ability to work in a team.
